Entry Doors: Should You Repair or Replace?

When to call about an entry door

  • The door is old and structurally damaged
  • It's hard to open, close or lock
  • You want better security for the building
  • The door no longer suits the look of the property

Signs a repair will do

Sticking, sagging or a latch that won't catch are often caused by loose hinges, worn hinge screws or a misaligned strike plate. These are usually straightforward repairs.

Signs it's time to replace

Rot, splits, a warped slab, a frame that's been broken in a forced entry, or a door that can't be made to close and lock reliably usually point to replacement.

Steel, wood or fiberglass

  • Steel: strong and usually the lower-cost option, but can dent and may rust if the finish is damaged.
  • Wood: classic look and good durability with maintenance, typically mid-range in price.
  • Fiberglass: strong, resists weather and dents, and is often the most expensive.

Commercial entry doors

Business doors take heavier use and may need panic bars, door closers and hardware that meets fire and building codes. Check requirements with your landlord or building department before changing exit doors.
